I traveled to Japan with the support of the NEA U.S./Japan Fellowship in 1996. At that time, I was researching “empty” space in Japanese architecture which profoundly influenced my site-specific work. Floor-based monochrome color installations inspired by the movement of light on tatami floors in the traditional home I lived in came out of this experience.
